Do you have a favorite mug or cup?

If so, you know how satisfying it is to sip your favorite beverage in that special container that speaks to you.

I have several coffee mugs that have all the silly puns written on them you'd expect..."not until I've had my coffee, etc" - but there's one I've had to retire from use.

It has three words that I don't want to add to my vocabulary, or allow to sink into my identity.

The phrase? "Grumpy Old Man".

While it might seem like overkill to get rid of a mug simply because it mentions old age, I find more and more reminders of my age every day, and I don't need one more.

The truth behind all of the jokes about middle age, 'senior moments', etc. is that we often have a deep anxiety about losing energy and opportunities over time. We fear that we'll be passed over, forgotten, or irrelevant.

If you haven't started taking your creative talent seriously by your 30s or 40s, you might convince yourself that it's too late.

Let me remind you of the scripture verse we started this newsletter with - it was spoken by Caleb, who was 85 when he requested that Joshua give him the most challenging assignment of his life. Rather than settle, Caleb decided it was time to take on something new.

​In this week's podcast episode, our guest Ruth Douthitt mentions how she went back to school for art at 38 and started her author career over two decades after first writing down notes for a story idea. 27 books later and having become a professional artist, she echoes Caleb's confidence that God can still start new things in the second half of your life.

The enemy would like nothing better than for those who have experienced God's goodness over time to stay SILENT about those successes.

Caleb had the experience his younger companions didn't.

Your art and creative thought process will have the unique insights God has given you built in - insights that AI, youth, and trends can't replace.

No matter what season of life you're in, remember this - when God gives you a promise, your age or season of life does not deter Him one bit.

Use every creative gift at your disposal at any age - because you just might discover the next thing God is birthing in you.
