Are you your own worst critic?

And should you be?

Nothing can make you more critical of yourself than subjecting work to being reviewed and edited, which is the process I'm now undergoing with our devotional Your Art, God's Heart.

It was 8 years ago that I first published it, and while I'm grateful for the impact it's had, I've always had a feeling that it could be improved.

So, I've taken on the goal of doing a 2nd edition - which will be freely available on the YouVersion app in the next couple of months.

The first thing I believe we creatives all have to come to grips with is this truth - our work can be consistently perfected, but it will never be perfect.

I can't tell you how many times I read a sentence that I felt really expressed my thought well - only to read it a day later and feel it totally missed.

At one point during the first edit, my editor told me point blank that I can't keep going back to fix things she had already approved.

My perfectionism was a knee-jerk reaction to the fear of not being able to control anyone's response to my work.

And that's the point - we can't control the outcome by being hyper-controlling creatives. You'll gonna have to trust God and let it go.

The second point is a little more positive - there's joy in seeing your work from a new perspective.

I'm more and more inspired as I've reworked some of the 21 lessons, and they are speaking to me in a new way as I go back into Scripture to find better ways to connect the Word with our daily creative lives.

So I'd love your feedback in this process of re-introducing Your Art, God's Heart to our creative community.
