Putting Healing In His Hands

The last two weeks have been pretty scary.

And the lesson I've learned has been echoing in my mind the entire time.

Last Sunday, I was enjoying an evening barbeque / pool party / get-together with our church's pastors and staff. My wife, son, daughter-in-law and our precious new granddaughter were all in attendance. It was the perfect way to rest and enjoy a blessed summer.

So imagine my surprise when after holding little Olivia for a few hours, being a proud grandpa, I got up to notice my right hand was totally immobile.

Not like it fell asleep with pins and needle shocks...just numb and lifeless.

I've now discovered I compressed a nerve in my arm unknowingly just by sitting too awkwardly in an attempt to make baby Olivia comfortable.

For her, I'd never worry about the discomfort. But there was a price I'd have to pay for not being careful with my posture.

Let's make sure to set the stage. This happened on Sunday. For the next 6 days, I would be in daily rehearsals, dress rehearsals and performances for a full musical production with orchestra and dancers. My piano parts were central to the flow of the show. Calling out / missing it would be a huge burden on the cast.

So, for the next 7 days, I played piano essentially one handed. My nerves and fine motor function on my right side were totally unreliable. Sometimes I could play. Other times, my hand would not cooperate.

There's probably nothing more concerning to a musician than the inability to tell your body what to do and have it respond.

The moral of this story isn't my need to have faith for healing (which I had to work on) or my hand's status (I'm getting treatment and the numbness is subsiding), but what happened on the last day of the performance.

I worked through my struggles and was prepared as much as possible to play both weekend shows. However, in the intermission of the second show, the drummer came up to me with a worried face.

"Bro...I need you to pray for my hands...they are cramping up."

Yes. The man I was right next too on the stage was experiencing a very similar fear and health issue.

I grabbed him, headed back to the dressing room area, and we prayed. I asked God to give my fellow musician stamina, grace, and healing to not only get through the show, but to have total restoration of facility.

He and I both played the rest of the performance as well as we ever have. Neither of us had to stop or break to recover or deal with pain or discomfort.

You might ask if I was praying the same prayer for my own ailment. Not really. But the situation spoke volumes about how God will allow us to go through trials so we can be ready to help others through them.

In 2 Corinthians, Paul explains how God uses our own trials to prepare us to help others.

You might be dealing with a life issue, a creative obstacle, or a crisis of confidence.

But you can take heart that the God of all comfort is not only ready to help you face and overcome your situation - but He's also preparing you to help someone else to do the same.

Seek Him in the struggle, have faith for the answer, and then look for the person who needs your encouragement. You just might experience the same fulfillment, healing and restoration I found on the bandstand that weekend.
