Are You Living for Legacy?

It would be so much easier if life played fair.

Alas, that's wishful thinking.

During this past week in my local arts community in South Florida, we have been dealing with a season of sadness as some influential creators and artists have passed away, many of them seemingly much too soon.

It's always hard to try to figure out how we are to handle these moments in our lives.

For you, maybe it's not a season of loss, but rather a financial, emotional or family struggle that is occupying your mind.

It's these times that refocus our attention on God's ultimate authority and sufficiency.

You come to a point where you realize all of your skill, ability, and know-how aren't enough to lift you out of a situation, and you reach like Peter reached out to Jesus before sinking under the waves of doubt and fear.

While we all deal with moments of fear, sadness and loss, I do believe those of us who carry a creator's heart have to process things a little differently.

Not only do we need to let the Lord lead and guide our emotional and spiritual response, we also need Him to redirect our thinking from what we're currently experiencing to the impact our creative work will have in the future.

The wonderful creators we're remembering in my community didn't spend decades in the arts trying to make a name for themselves. They truly gave themselves to serving God and our artistic community. And the impact will be felt long after the theaters and concert venues darken their stages.

It's that generational mission that can fuel you when it doesn't feel like life is making sense.

Hebrews 12:2 explains how even Jesus had to look forward to a future legacy in order to power through the incredible obstacles He faced at the Cross.

[Heb 12:2 KJV] 2 Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of [our] faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.

The joy that He was aiming for wasn't a present one - it was one He would experience after enduring, and one that would enfold all of us into that same legacy of joy and reward.

I pray today, if you're facing a major struggle in your mind, body, or spirit, that you would envision a legacy of joy and impact on the other side of your moment of opposition, and that you'll take heart and courage in walking out the unique creative call God has on your life - no matter the circumstances!
