➡️ This Is Why Everyone Adored Dolly

The tributes all say the same thing..."Everyone loved Dolly."

As the world remembers the larger-than-life persona and impact of Dolly Parton this week, it's not lost on me that she managed to create her own lane as an artist, entrepreneur, and creative, and not once struggle to integrate her faith in God.

It may seem a little harsh, but I even questioned if it was because of the genre and style of her music - country has always been receptive to messages about God and faith.

But I think that would be totally missing the point.

Dolly Parton wouldn't have changed her message or her approach to life, no matter what the genre or industry she worked in.

She laughed at all of the critiques and jabs at her image, because it never once made her feel less than.

In a world where people will switch opinions, relationships, and platforms in order to be liked, Dolly was 100% true to who she was.

People gravitate to integrity, no matter where or how it shows up.

So, even though thousands of messages have been shared about her life and the lessons we can learn from it, I think it's only right to share my big takeaway with you.

And it's a perspective that Dolly Parton shares with Paul the apostle.

I watched a few interviews where Dolly shared her childhood experience, as her family farmed the land and survived on what they could grow and cultivate. She said they rarely visited a store, not just because they were poor, but mostly because they really didn't need to buy anything they couldn't make at home.

That kind of grounding sticks with you even when your financial life changes and you gain more resources.

It's clear that while Dolly Parton was a savvy businesswoman, her wealth was found in artistic expression, relationships and faith, not bank accounts.

In this way, she echoes Paul's declaration in Philippians 3.

[Phl 3:7-8 NASB20] 7 But whatever things were gain to me, these things I have counted as loss because of Christ. 8 More than that, I count all things to be loss in view of the surpassing value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them [mere] rubbish, so that I may gain Christ...

It's the freedom of being detached from the desires for approval and the trappings of fame that made her so richly generous and open to blessing others as an artist.

And that made her irresistibly lovable.

And if we want a life as rich and fulfilling as Dolly's, we'd be wise to point ourselves in the same direction.

How can you release your expectations of success, and think instead of how you can bless others with your life, your creativity, and your generosity today?

That's a question I'm sure you'll be glad you asked and answered for yourself. And it will be a fitting tribute to a legend in music and culture.

Got a lot on your mind? Well, if you don't, I'd love to learn how you keep yourself from being overrun by all of the things that surround us daily. Like many creatives, my biggest mental battle is usually overthinking and being unable to 'switch off'. Wake up...and immediately thoughts of to-do lists, worries and events flood my head. Try to go to sleep...and I'm besieged by that "one more thing" rattling around in my brain that I didn't finish, post or complete. Maybe that's you as well....

If you're fighting a battle for your peace, you're fighting a good fight. I've become more and more aware that my greatest daily challenge is not achieving my dreams, or making a tremendous income. It's experiencing daily peace and joy without being overwhelmed by my circumstances. Isaiah 26:3 provides the key to achieving this kind of peace. You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you. (ESV) The question is this: do we, as creatively oriented...

Sometimes...every once in a while.... God makes it obvious. Attending the 2nd ever YouVersion Partner Summit in Oklahoma City this week was more than a full-circle moment. It was God making the path clear - and I want to make sure that you see how your creative life is a part of that path. I became a YouVersion...
